Mumble (Elijah Wood), de meester van de tapdance, heeft een probleem. Zijn kleine zoon Erik is bang om te dansen. Hij loopt weg van huis en ontmoet de machtige Sven, een pingu´n die kan vliegen! Mumble heeft weinig hoop om enige concurrentie te bieden aan dit machtige voorbeeldfiguur, maar het wordt allemaal nog erger wanneer de wereld opgeschud wordt door onvoorziene invloedrijke krachten. Erik krijgt de verhalen van zijn vaders moed te horen en brengt de pingu´n-natie en allerlei andere prachtige schepselen samen om alles weer recht te zetten.
